Laxmi Parthasarathy is passionate about leveraging the power of new media models to provide solutions in a rapidly changing media sector where voice and representation are integral to success. When Laxmi was growing up in Toronto, Canada she became frustrated with the incessant negative portrayal of her neighborhood and others like it, by the mainstream media and created an alternative print and online news source that allowed citizens to contribute to a discussion about their community and shed light on the positive and powerful stories going unrecognized. The publication gained the recognition of two national newspapers, provincial and federal government, and championed the way for a discussion around the representation of neighborhoods labeled “priority” in the city. Her community organization and newspaper, MY ROOTS, was Ashoka Canada’s first Youth Venture. Laxmi went on to pursue a career as a Media Development professional recognizing that challenges around leading positive change in the media sector were similar around the world.

She currently works on Ashoka’s Framework Change initiative, developing collaborations that position media leaders to provide powerful, thoughtful content that enables audiences to see how the world is changing and realize their agency to contribute to this change in positive ways. Leveraging Ashoka’s vast network of solutions suppliers she aspires to build a network of media innovators and leaders who see a new paradigm and want to be a part of leading a framework change in the media sector.

Prior to Ashoka, she worked in Manzini, Swaziland at the country’s only gender based violence prevention NGO where she developed and executed a national media campaign against gender based violence and lead media trainings, workshops and partnerships with local journalists to responsibly report on cases of violence against women and provide critical information about a system of care and support in the country.

Laxmi is also an Executive Board Member of Canadian Crossroads International, and was selected as Canada’s Top 20 Under 20. She has worked on media, communications, and development projects in Canada, Swaziland, India, Rwanda, Mexico and the UK. She received an MSc from the London School of Economics and Social Science.
